Puritan

By choosing to charter Puritan, you financially support our initiatives to Preserve and Protect our Marine Environment. 15% of our charter revenue is devolved in such initiatives. This year, thanks to our charter clients’ financial support, we launched the Blue Regatta, the first Plastic-Free Regatta for Classic Yachts (more details here) . In this regatta we manage to fully avoid the use of 6,000 plastic bottles, replace plastic bags and cutlery with marine-friendly alternatives, encourage more responsible habits with owners and sailors of more than 600 yachts .
This year we keep spreading the concept of our Blue Regatta during the Monaco Classic Week and the Spetses Classic Regatta. Our target is to save 75,000 plastic bottles per year, by 2027 and ban the use of plastic from sport events for classic yachts! Puritan Initiatives also include ‘Seaborne Microplastic Analysis’, Posidonia Meadows In Spetses, ext… Your contribution is important.

HISTORY

Puritan is a piece of history of yachting. Launched in 1930 and designed by the famous naval architect John G. Alden, whose plans are kept at the MIT as part of the US Maritime History, she is the epitome of America’s acclaimed tradition for luxurious sailing yachts.

Her shape and her look fulfil and gratify any classic yacht lover’s desire of beauty and harmony and John Alden’s powerful lines are a statement of seaworthiness. The elegance and charm of her interior and the warm atmosphere enhanced by the light Oregon pine finish makes any guest feel at ease and welcome, uncluttered by unnecessary additions or frills.
One of the great yachts of all time and for the first time after twenty five years she is again available for your next cruises.

Originally commissioned for Mr Edward M. Brown, a member of the New York Club in 1929, designed by the renown naval architect John G. Alden and still considered his masterpiece, she was built in steel hull and with teak deck and superstructures in 1930 at the Electric Boat Company, the same company that had been appointed by the US navy to build US submarines.

Being used as private yacht until 1941, Puritan has served under the US navy to patrol off the Mexican costs in the vicinity of the Guadalupe Island, about 350 miles south of San Diego and 150 miles seaward of the Guadalupe. At that time she was converted into a military ship, with officers sleeping on the after part and enlisted men forward. Puritan was credited with sighting a Japanese submarine which was supposedly later sunk, due to her radio call.

After the WWII, the new owner, Harry Bauer, invited the American Museum of Natural History of New York to organize an expedition to the Gulf of California using Puritan as its base. They sailed more than 4,000 miles and collected three quarter of a ton of scientific specimens, ranging from mollusks to whale skull, ranging age from Miocene to Pleistocene. The results of this expedition are still conserved at the Museum of Natural History.

In 1967, Puritan was going to have her third birth: she was sold to Mariano Prado-Sosa, son of an ex-president of Peru, who brought her back to a yacht standard. New air-conditioning, new engine, new varnish… She was sailed as a Beauty Queen among the Caribbean Islands and Acapulco.

In 1972, after being seized by the Peruvian government, she was again sold to Bill Bolling, and Petsy Kennedy, an American gentleman who had just sold his previous boat to Teddy Kennedy, before falling in love with this beautiful schooner. He restored her again and sailed her to win the Mystic Schooner race in her class, in Connecticut. She then was put for charter in the Caribbean Sea.

In 1991 she was sold the the Ferruzzi family, who was supporting the Italian Challenge to the America’s Cup in 1992 with ‘Il Moro di Venezia’ and attended all the Round Robins as the family yacht. She has been sailed privately in the Caribbean as well as the Mediterranean Sea, since then until 2015.

In 2015, she has been sold to the current owner, who is a classic yacht passionate and owns already another classic schooner built in 1937, Orianda, and a gaff cutter racer 10m international class built in 1910, Marga.

After 25 years, Puritan, is finally back in the charter market. She will be sailing in the Mediterranean Sea for the next two seasons but the owner is planning to sail her to the Caribbean and to Antigua in the very next future.
